Ohio’s 529 Plan, CollegeAdvantage, is proud to partner with the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation for the third year to present the Book Jackets program, designed to encourage central Ohio K-8 students to spend more time reading.
For the 2018-2019 program, the Book Jackets program successes include:
- More than 5,500 students have completed Book Jackets
- Students have read more than 3.8 million minutes
- 321 classrooms participated this year
- 90 new schools joined the program this year
Michelle Bruggerman, the Manager of Education and Community Partnerships for Columbus Blue Jackets, said, “The Columbus Blue Jackets are excited to partner with CollegeAdvantage to provide educators in our community with a no-cost resource that encourages kids to make a habit of reading outside the classroom. In recent years, we have seen tremendous growth in the number of classes participating in Book Jackets and the majority of teachers indicate that they’ve seen students’ interest in reading increase because they are Blue Jackets fans.”
For all central Ohio teachers interested in participating in this Book Jacket session, Friday, March 1, is the last day to register your classroom to participate in the program. March 1 is also the last day for teachers to submit their students’ reading minutes to be eligible for April’s All-Star Skate. The last deadline for teachers to submit their classroom’s reading minutes for the student prizes is Monday, April 1.
Here’s a video of a Blue Jackets defenseman Scott Harrington’s Book Jackets visit to a classroom at Winterset Elementary School. Harrington stopped by this Columbus City School to spend time reading with students.
