Ohio 529 Supports Columbus Metropolitan Library's Summer Reading Challenge

Ohio’s 529 Plan, CollegeAdvantage, proudly supports many statewide outreach programs to encourage young, bright minds to see all of life’s educational possibilities.

We are pleased to join Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML) in support of their Summer Reading Challenge, to help students, their families, and their teachers fend off the “summer slide” and keep reading skills strong over the break.

Summer Reading Challenge

Central to this outreach is CML’s Summer Reading Challenge, which will run through Saturday, July 31. You will need to have a CML library card to participate in the Summer Reading Challenge. If you don’t have one, you can apply online here. The Summer Reading Challenge will also include fun in-person programs and events to inspire participants to join.

The goal is to read 15 minutes a day for 30 days. After 15 days, participants will receive a prize. After reading for 30 days, participants can earn additional prizes and a raffle ticket for a Kings Island Prize pack. Lastly, if a reader completes Mission challenges, they will earn extra raffle entries. The prizes will be awarded for four age groups: Pre-readers (ages 0-4), Kids (ages 5-11), Teens (ages 12-17) and Adults (ages 18+). The prizes will be specifically tailored to each group.

To sign up for Summer Reading Challenge, visit columbuslibrary.org/summerreading or visit your local library branch.

Ohio’s 529 Plan is the Challenge Sponsor for Summer Reading Challenge

In order to reach as many central Ohio children and keep their reading skills sharp, Ohio’s 529 Plan, contributed $20,529 to CML to sponsor the summer reading program.

With that contribution, Ohio’s 529 Plan is challenging central Ohio residents to also invest in CML and young minds from central Ohio. With a one-time donation, you will provide one local child with a summer filled with full access to books, teaching staff, and learning opportunities to improve their reading skills as well as fun, virtual programs that will entertain and encourage the young minds to keep learning. A gift of $10 will give a child his or her own book to keep. A donation of $45 will support one student to receive summer’s worth of programming, while $225 will do the same for five students. But any amount will help and will be appreciated.

“Helping our children maintain literacy skills during the summer is critical to future academic success.” said Tim Gorrell, executive director of Ohio’s 529 Plan, CollegeAdvantage. “We extend sincere thanks to all of you who supported this effort to help the children in our region prepare for the fall and for their future.”

If you are interested in supporting CML’s Summer Reading Challenge, the deadline for donations is June 15. Please help push CML over their $20,529 goal for this reading challenge. As of Monday, June 13, over $15,000 had been raised to support their Summer Reading Challenge.

By investing in your local library, you’re investing in a local child’s education and building up the central Ohio community. Visit here to learn how to make a donation to CML’s Summer Reading Challenge and support local children.
